چکیده

artemisinin, a secondary metabolite, is produced by artemisia annua l. plant and is nowadays, the most effective drug in the treatment of malaria. this component and its derivatives are also used against hepatitis b and different types of cancers. chemical synthesis of artemisinin is possible but because of its complex structure and low yield, it is not economically feasible. since this plant serves as the only commercial source of artemisinin production while also producing it at very low levels, efforts to increase the production source of this valuable drug are indispensable. in this study, the effects of four hormones namely: gibberellic acid (ga3), cytokinin( 2-ip), methyl jasmonate(meja) and salicylic acid( sa) on artemisinin production were studied at different time points following treatments. it was observed that meja had the highest positive effect on artemisinin production as compared to the other three hormones, and in a descending order of effect there stood 2-ip, sa, and ga3. therefore, due to the more provoking and uniformly increasing effects on artemisinin content throughout the study, meja is a proved to be a promising and suitable candidate for further studies in field applications.

Effect of Sugars on Artemisinin Production in Artemisia annua L.: Transcription and Metabolite Measurements

The biosynthesis of the valuable sesquiterpene anti-malarial, artemisinin, is known to respond to exogenous sugar concentrations. Here young Artemisia annua L. seedlings (strain YU) were used to measure the transcripts of six key genes in artemisinin biosynthesis in response to growth on sucrose, glucose, or fructose. The measured genes are: from the cytosolic arm of terpene biosynthesis, 3-hyd...

Artemisia annua (Sweet Annie), Other Artemisia Species, Artemisinin, Artemisinin Derivatives, and Malaria

This paper reviews the use of whole-plant Artemisia annua (sweet Annie) as it pertains to malaria including history, chemistry, clinical efficacy, pharmacokinetics, dosing, safety, and resistance. Artemisinin, the sesquiterpene lactone found in the plant, and various semi-synthetic variants of it used as critical drugs around the world for malaria are discussed in comparison to the whole plant....

Effects of Environmental Factors on Growth and Artemisinin Content of Artemisia annua L.

Seeds of two selected clones of Artemisia annua L., TC1 and TC2, were germinated in a greenhouse. Four-week-old seedlings from both clones were grown in the Thù Đúc province of Ho Chi Minh City on 2(nd) January 2009 and Đà Lat on 20(th) January 2009. During this study period in Thù Đúc province, which is situated 4-5 m above sea level, was experiencing a tropical, dry season with temperatures r...

An Endophytic Pseudonocardia Species Induces the Production of Artemisinin in Artemisia annua

Endophytic actinobacteria colonize internal tissues of their host plants and are considered as a rich and reliable source of diverse species and functional microorganisms. In this study, endophytic actinobacterial strain YIM 63111 was isolated from surface-sterilized tissue of the medicinal plant Artemisia annua. We identified strain YIM 63111 as a member of the genus Pseudonocardia. A. annua s...

Examining The Extraction Of Artemisinin From Artemisia Annua Using Ultrasound

Artemisinin suppresses the life-cycle of the plasmodium parasite which causes malaria. It is found naturally occurring within the trichome glands of the Artemisia annua plant. Traditional methods for extracting artemisinin are time-consuming and have high environmental impact due to the temperatures and organic solvents which must be employed. Ultrasound decreases these through acoustic streami...

Nutrient deficiency in the production of artemisinin, dihydroartemisinic acid, and artemisinic acid in Artemisia annua L.

Artemisia annua became a valuable agricultural crop after the World Health Organization recommended artemisinin as a component of ACT (artemisinin-combination based therapies) for malaria in 2001. A cloned, greenhouse-grown, A. annua (Artemis) subjected to an acidic soil and macronutrient deficit was evaluated for artemisinin production. Lack of lime (L) and macronutrients (N, P, and K) reduced...
